Our very active, sociable client doesn’t let his Acquired Brain injury and Cerebral Palsy hold him back from enjoying his favourite activities which include horse riding, swimming, gym, attending football matches, Boccia and cooking. He is looking for equally active team members who would love to support him attending these activities and in his personal care/life - if you are an Arsenal fan well, that’s an added bonus!

The Role:

Our client is a 37-year-old man with an Acquired Brain Injury incurred at birth, he also has Quadriplegic Cerebral Palsy/Ataxia which affects his muscles and movements so he would need assistance with holding cutlery and whilst eating. He has Dysarthria which affects his jaw control, and it may take a little while for new team members to understand our client, but he is happy to repeat himself until you get to know and understand him. He is a wheelchair user and can transfer with support.

Our client likes to be independent and make his own choices of where to go, what to eat and what to wear. You will support him in making choices in these areas whilst ensuring that choices are limited in order not to overwhelm him.

Working alongside a supportive care team (2-1 care at all times), this role would be to provide full support to our client in all areas of his life including full personal care, making sure he looks his best (our client is a very smart dresser), personal admin, cooking, accompanying him to his various activities and ensuring that he follows his care plan to reach his therapy goals.

Our client lives in an adapted self-contained flat within the family home. He lives with his mum and two sisters and is part of a very close-knit supportive family which includes a small family dog.

Our client is generally happy and settled and is a caring and engaging man with a great sense of humour however, he can become agitated and irritable on occasions, usually triggered by tiredness, hunger or when he feels uncomfortable in any given situation. Full training in all aspects of our client’s support will be given to manage these incidences.

About You:

You will have at least 2 years’ experience in the Care sector and at least 1 year supporting someone with an Acquired Brain Injury

You will be happy to join our client on days out, working with another Support Worker. You will ideally be a driver as you may drive our client in his own automatic adapted vehicle but non-drivers who can commute easily to our client’s home will also be considered.

You will be kind, positive, warm and reliable with a sociable personality and will proactively encourage our client in both his chosen hobbies and others which he might find of interest. You will be energetic, active and comfortable supporting a physically engaging lifestyle.

Our client does not feel pain so you will need to remain constantly vigilant throughout your shift to ensure our client’s wellbeing and safety and ensure that the correct medication and any pain relief/first aid required is given in a timely manner. You will work with our client and his therapists, following his Care plan, to help him achieve his rehabilitation goals.

It would be great if you shared an interest in some of our client’s hobbies but an open attitude to learning about his interests is equally valued. You will be comfortable in the company of animals as our client has a small dog.

Pay:

£18 per hour weekdays £19 per hour weekends £36 per hour bank holidays Hours / Shifts

Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday 08:00 to 20:00 (12 hours), ideally split between 2 Support Workers.

Additional hours to cover holidays/staff absences are often available.
